Pro Evolution Soccer doesn't have the corporate capital or licensing of FIFA, but it undeniably does an extraordinary job of capturing the in-the-moment authenticity of what football really feels like. The systems at play are still some of the best and most sophisticated you'll find in a sports game, and there's a nice balance between high-level tactics and the more action-packed moment-to-moment experience.

We should start with the elephant in the room. Pro Evolution Soccer doesn't have the licenses that FIFA does, at least not out of the box. Instead, you're presented with generic rosters and names for all of the major teams and leagues. Fortunately, there are a number of resources online that allow you to download up-to-date rosters. That means that Pro Evolution Soccer can hypothetically offer you any roster for any year as long as you're willing to go to the little bit of extra effort. That said, these fan-made characters aren't going to be able to match the photorealism of FIFA's players. PES does offer some player and team likelinesses, but they aren't as comprehensive.

The advantage of Pro Evolution Soccer always playing second fiddle is that they're motivated to work that much harder to develop a quality game. The latest version of PES has seen both major and minor alterations to the formula that players already know. Goalkeepers have been given a huge upgrade that makes them a critical component of the game, while upgraded animations ensure that what's happening on your controller matches what's happening on the screen.

Pro Evolution Soccer is more visceral and nimble than ever before too. There's less lag between pressing a button and seeing the results and less feeling that you're fighting against the game, and that's reflected in everything from ball control to turning. But despite these changes, there's still a unique sense of personality to each of the players. While they may not map directly to real-life competitors, putting together the right team is just as important as having a tactical mind and good hand-eye coordination.
